
You can see many wooden tablets in the photo above.
Those tablets are called "ema"(絵馬").
It is votive picture tablet.

We write our prayers and wishes on the wooden tablet and give to shinto shrine.

In now a days, Sugawara Michizane who is a object of worship in this shrine, is worship as a god of study.
Because he was excellent scholar and poet.
Many students and their family come to pray for the pass of thire examination.

Interesting. It looks like a lot of people have said prayers and made wishes here.
How interesting! After a while, there must be thousends of prayers, what do they become?.. And I wonder if you made a wish...:-)

What happens to those tablets after a few years?

I don't know what happens to them certaily.
