Gyoko-mon

This is a gate named "Gyoko-mon (Gyoko-gate)".
It is the main entrance of Yushima Seido that is a historical site located in Yushima.
I took this photo from inside of the precinct.

Chinese Pistache in Yushima Seido

Yushima Seido is a confucious temple established in Edo era.
In late autumn, leaves of chinese pistache trees have beautiful colour.

Before the Festival

Ume blossoms has started blooming in Tokyo.
Today, I visited Yushima Tenjin that is a Shinto shrine located in Yushima, Bunkyo ward.


Ume festival of the shrine starts from tommorow.

A View From Yushima Seido

I took this photo to the south.
You can see dome of Nicolai Cathedral ( Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral ) over there.

I took this photo on Hijiri-bashi (bridge).
Yushima Seido is a confucious temple built in Edo era.
That street along the long wall is Sotobori-dori (street).

Ume Festival in Yushima Tenjin (3)

She is a traditional instrument player.
That instrument is Biwa.
She played music in ume garden as an event of the festival.
It is pity that I was not able to take a photo when she was playing the music.

In this time many people visit yushima tenjin to see ume blossoms.
On that day when I visited yushima tenjin, it was very crowded.
At popular spot, It was hard to take a photo.

Ume Festival in Yushima Tenjin (1)

Last Saturday, I visited yushima tenjin ( yushima shrine ) to see "Ume Festival".
Those ume blossoms were good to see
Many people came to the shrine.
The festival is held from February 8 to March 8.
During the term, many events are held on Saturday and Sunday.

Yushima Tenjin (7)

This is a fence of yushima tenjin.
I took this photo from out of the shrine.
So this is the last post of this series.
I will start new series from tomorrow.
But I will come back to here in yushima tenjin again to take a picture of ume blossoms in full bloom.

Yushima Tenjin (6)

Those are bonsai sold in yushima tenjin by vender.
Bonsai is a miniature potted tree.
Of course those are miniature ume tree, so yushima tenjin is a noted place of ume blossoms.

This is a garden in yushima tenjin.
So many ume trees were planted in the garden.
I think those white ume blossoms are symbol of the shrine.




You can see the people who are looking those ume blossoms in thses photos.
When those ume blossoms are full bloom, so many people will come here.

Yushima Tenjin (4)

You can see many wooden tablets in the photo above.
Those tablets are called "ema"(絵馬").
It is votive picture tablet.



We write our prayers and wishes on the wooden tablet and give to shinto shrine.


In now a days, Sugawara Michizane who is a object of worship in this shrine, is worship as a god of study.
Because he was excellent scholar and poet.
Many students and their family come to pray for the pass of thire examination.

Yushima Tenjin (3)

Yushima tenjin is noted for ume (Japanese apricot) blossoms.
A lot of ume trees are planted in the precincts of the shinto shrine .
Because Sugawara Michizane who is a object of worship in the shrine, loved ume so much.

Yushima Tenjin (2)

This is the main shrine of yushima tenjin.
It was rebuilt of wood in 1995.


Formal name of yushima tenjin is "Yushima Tenmangu" in present time.
"Tenmangu" means a shinto shrine to worship "Sugawara Michizane" as a god.
Sugawara Michizane(845-903) was a excellent scholar, poet and politician.

"Tenjin" means Sugawara Michizane as god, also it has same meaning to "Tenmangu".
( But originally, "tenjin" means the heavenly gods. )

There are many "tenmangu" over Japan.

Yushima Tenjin (1)

Photo above is the maine entrance of yushima tenjin.
Yushima tenjin is a shinto shrine that is located in yushima.
It is near to shinobazu-pond which is in ueno park.

That gate is called "do-torii"(copper gate).
It was built in 1667.

You can see museum of the shrine in right side of the photo.



Photo above is approach to the main shrine.
There are many stalls along the approach.

Yushima Seido (4)

I go down the hill.


This is a view of "nyutokumon" from inside.


I get out of yushima seido from there.



This is Hijiri gate of yushima seido.
It is along hongo-dori (street) and close to hijiri bashi (bridge).
Now, I have got out of yushima seido.

Yushima Seido (3)

This building is "Taiseiden" which is the main hall in yushima seido.
Current taiseiden was rebuilt in 1935.




By the way, yushima seido is called "Birthplace of Japanese school education".
Because there was a public school which was under control of the tokugawa shogunate goverment in yushima seido.

Yushima Seido (2)

This is a statue of confucius.
Yushima Seido was established by tokugawa shogunate in 1690 as confucius temple.


I walk on the pass way along the wall.



I found a gate on the side of the pass way.
This gate is called "nyutokumon".
It was built in 1704.


I still walk on the pass way.


I go through this gate to approch to main hall.


I go up the hill to see main hall.
