I took these photos at kanda-surugadai in ochanomizu.
There are so many musical instruments shops there.
I don't know certainly why those musical instruments shops gather in this neighborhood.
But I suppose the reason is that the neighborhood is students town.

Ochanomizu

in front of ochanomizu stationI took photo above in front of ochanomizu railway station.
Ochanomizu (ocha-no-mizu) literally means "water of tea" or "water for tea" in English.
In Edo era, there was a fountain in a temple which was on north side of current kanda-gawa(river).
And the water of the fountain was given to Tokugawa shogun for making tea .

"ochanomizu" is not town name.
But the neighbourhood around ochanomizu station ( a part of kanda section and a part of yushima section ) is called ochanomizu.

This neighbourhood is well known as students town.
Because there are many university in ochanomizu.

( It is not fountain )
The monument is on a corner of the crossing in the first photo.

kanda-gawa(river)
Kand-gawa is a river which flows in Tokyo from west to east.
And this river meets sumida-gawa(river).
I took this photo on the ochanomizu-bashi (bridge) to the West.
This bridge is not so beauitiful (I think ), but it is a nice place to take a picture of the river.

An Ume Tree

After taking some photos of hijiri-bridge, I strolled around there.
And I was thinking where I should go.
When I walked through a little park I found a ume tree(Japanese apricot).
You can see Nicolai cathedral under those branchs of the tree in this photo.

I looked the tree for a while.
Those blossoms were about to bloom.
And then, the ume tree told me where I should go.
So my heart was set.
I decided to visit "Yushima Tenjin" that is a shinto shrin.
I had to leave ochanomizu, but it was not so far.

========================================
I will post new series (yushima tenjin) in several days.
Key words are "study" and "ume".
Stay tuned!!

They set snow blocks on the street to make snowman.
"Yukidaruma" means Japanese style snowman.
"Kanda Yukidaruma Fair" is held every year at kanda-ogawacho.
In this year, it was held from January 16 to January 19.
I happened to see it on the first day of the festival.
So almost works had not been finished yet on that time.
But they looked happy to make snowman in heart of Tokyo.

Snow Block on the Street

snow block on the street
On that day I walked from akihabara to Nikorai-do(Nicolai Cathedral).
After I took photos of the cathedral, I still strolled around ochanomizu.

When I walked on yasukuni-dori(street) at kanda-ogawamachi(town name), I saw a large snow block on the street.

It was a strange view. so I tried to touched on the block.
Yes, it was really snow.
I thought it was brought to there from somewhere far away.

Well, I give you a quiz.

"Why did they set the snow block on the street?"

Please write your idea as a comment!!
I will answer tomorrow.

To be continued.

Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral

Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral
Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral
We usually call this cathedral "Nikorai-do"(Nicolai Cathedral).
It is a symbol of ochanomizu.
This cathedral was built in 1891.
Unfortunately, it was half destroyed by great kanto earthquake in 1923.
But it was restored in 1929.

Please imagine Tokyo 100 years ago.
There was no tall building, and not so noisy.
They could see this beautiful cathedral from far away, and the bell would sound far and wide.

Thanks for walking with me from akihabara electric town to here.
This walking course is not so long, but you can enjoy the scenery changing dramatic.
I hope you to walk there if you visit Tokyo.

By the way, I will post photos about ochanomizu in several days.
Ochanomizu is a my favorite place in Tokyo.

"Ocha no mizu" literally means "water of tea" or "water for tea" in English.

By the way, I see a girl sketching on the street.
I wonder what she is drawing.
